Why Crews Use Pipehorn for Damage Prevention

Built for Difficult Locates

Broken tracer wire, short services, and poor conductors can make utility locating difficult.

Verify Marks Before Digging

A Safety Sweep can help crews confirm utility marks and discover missed lines.

Find What Others Miss

Pipehorn helps crews identify difficult-to-locate utilities before excavation begins.

What is a Safety Sweep?

Before excavation begins, many crews perform a quick Safety Sweep to help verify marks and identify utilities that may not have been located.

Calling 811 and verifying utility marks is the first step before digging. But experienced crews know that not every line is easy to locate.

Sometimes marks stop short. Sometimes tracer wire is damaged. Sometimes there is an abandoned or difficult-to-locate line that does not match what crews see in the field.

That is why many crews perform a Safety Sweep before they dig—a quick scan with Pipehorn to help identify unmarked, damaged, or difficult-to-locate utilities before excavation begins.

Missing / Incomplete Marks

When marks do not make sense or stop short, a Safety Sweep can help crews verify the route before digging.

Difficult-to-Locate Utilities

Broken tracer wire, short services, poor conductors, and congested areas can make utilities harder to locate.

Reduce Risk Before Digging

A quick Safety Sweep helps crews find what others may have missed and avoid costly utility damage.

Pipehorn Safety Sweep Recognized by CGA for Damage Prevention

A 2022 CGA case study showed that combining a Safety Sweep, ultra-high frequency locating, and field training significantly reduced utility damages before excavation.

In a 2022 case study, the Common Ground Alliance (CGA) highlighted how Peoples Gas used Pipehorn’s ultra-high frequency Safety Sweep to help identify unmarked and difficult-to-locate utilities before excavation.

The case study found that combining high-frequency locating, a Safety Sweep technique, and field training led to:

  • 67% fewer damages by in-house crews
  • 77% fewer damages caused by “Facility Not Marked”

The case study also highlighted the same locating challenges crews face every day: damaged tracer wire, cast iron with resistive joints, short services, and abandoned or unmarked lines—the same kinds of challenges Pipehorn is designed to help crews find.
